Cuba & The Cold War Trip Itinerary

Day 1
Depart from Montreal, Canada and arrive at Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, Cuba. Check into your hotel and get your first taste of Havana by participating in a sunset tour of Old Havana with an experienced Englishspeaking guide from the Jose Marti Center. Enjoy dinner with your colleagues at a restaurant in Old Havana and evening of leisure.
Day 2
See and meet ordinary Cubans in Havana by visiting cultural sites such as El Morro fort, meet people at the Malecon sea wall, talk to attendees at a baseball game, get a salsa lesson, visit the Hemingway farm, explore vibrant Havana neighborhoods or spend your day in Old Havana.

Day 3
Arrive by shuttle to the Jose Marti Center, a beautiful historic colonial mansion where you will be taking your courses on the impact of the Cold War on Cuba. After a tour of the facility, and a welcome reception, attend a lecture focusing on the life of Jose Marti, known as the father of Cuba. Understanding Marti’s life allows for a greater understanding of the causes and origins of the Cuban Revolution. After lunch, attend a workshop given by faculty from the University of Havana covering the history of the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis and CubanAmerican Embargo. Evening at leisure.

Day 4
Visit Plaza de la Revolucion, site of some of the most monumental and historic speeches given by the architects of the Cuban Revolution, see the Ministry of the Interior building with an enormous image of Che Guevara and Ministry of Informatics and Communications with an image of Camilo Cienfuegos After lunch, visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Hotel Nacional de Cuba in the Vedado district of Havana.
This historic hotel with a storied past was built on a colonial era battery and served as the headquarters for Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in defense of an aerial attack during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Take a guided tour of the onsite museum, tunnels and lookout points preserved since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Evening at leisure after returning to your hotel.

Day 5
Visit the historic University of Havana. The University founded in 1728 is the oldest in Cuba and one of the oldest university in the Americas. Tour the beautiful campus in the center of the Vedado district of Havana and engage with faculty and students. The University served as the intellectual headquarters for the Cuban Revolution and its Law School graduated Fidel Castro. After lunch, attend a guided tour of the Museum of the Revolution, residing in the former Presidential Palace in Old Havana. Evening at leisure after returning to your hotel.

Day 6
Visit an outdoor military exhibit near the 16th century fort El Morro. The exhibit consists of Soviet nuclear missiles transported to Cuba discovery of which triggered the Cuban Missile Crisis, Soviet MIG fighter jets, surface to air conventional missiles and wreckage from an American reconnaissance air force jet shot down by Cuban/Soviet artillery. After lunch, visit the home of Che Guevara. Evening at leisure after returning to your hotel.

Day 7
Visit the Bay of Pigs, site of a US backed invasion by Cuban exiles during the infancy of the Kennedy Administration. The failed invasion marked a permanent change in USCuban relations and heated up the Cold War. Attend a guided tour of the Bay of Pigs Museum.

Day 8
Bid farewell to Havana and leave for an early morning departure to Jose Marti International Airport and catch flight to Montreal.
